ANNUAL ATHLETIC MEET

Eighteenth Annual Athletic meet was held on 31st October 2019 at Dr. B R Ambedkar stadium. Ms Mahita S Bhat , National Throwball player, IT analyst, Ex Carmelite presided over the inauguration and she declared the meet open. Ms Mahita urged the students to choose a sport of their personal choice as sports helps to enhance the overall personality of an individual. The students took part in track and field events like 100 mtrs, 200 mtrs, 400 mtrs, 1500mtrs, 4×100 mtrs relay, shot put, Javeline throw and others.

The overall championship trophy was bagged by Class II A.




RASHTRIYA EKTA DIWAS

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was observed on 31st October to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel who was instrumental in keeping India united. Principal Mrs. Sandhya Menezes administered the pledge to the staff and the students to foster and reinforce their dedication to preserve and strengthen unity, integrity and security of our Nation. This was followed by “ Run for Unity” headed by the students of NSS unit.




ALEXANDER MEMORIAL CRICKET TOURNAMENT

The Alexander Memorial Cricket Tournament was held on October 1st 2019 in memory of its Founder Late Mr. Alexander Menezes. The Cricket maniacs found a great opportunity to exhibit their zeal and passion towards the game. Ten teams participated each representing a class in the knock out matches. Class II C emerged victorious against II D.

GANDHI JAYANTHI CELEBRATION

The Carmelites celebrated 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji on Oct 2nd. A pledge taking ceremony on avoidance of single use plastic marked the Celebrations. Bhajans dear to Gandhiji was sung by Priyanka of II A. Snippets about Gandhi’s life and incidents that highlighted moral values were read by students. Later Principal Mrs. Sandhya Menezes spoke on Gandhi’s ideologies. Related to achievements and principles of Gandhi - Quiz, Essay writing and pencil sketching competitions were held for the students. In keeping with the current push for environmentalism and to draw attention to Gandhi’s emphasis on health, sanitation and environment, Carmel had organised Plogging. The staff and the students took part in collecting plastic waste in the campus surroundings. The drive also created awareness in the public to eliminate single use plastic.




PAPER BAG MAKING AND SHARING WITH VENDORS

On 24th September 2019, an activity was conducted by the Eco Club and the Community Service volunteers. Students made paper carry bags and covers using newspapers. Later it was distributed to the street vendors and grocers to create awareness in them that paper is environment friendly and biodegradable and they should stop using Plastic.




TOBACCO PLEDGE FOR LIFE - CAMPAIGN IN ASSOCIATION WITH SAMBANDH FOUNDATION

Tobacco use is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs. Carmelites took pledge that intended to encourage abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption. PLEDGE FOR LIFE- “ I Pledge for Life that I will never touch cigarette, bidi, gutka, pan masala, hookah, e-cigarette or any tobacco product in my life. I will also encourage my family, friends and others around me not to do so”.




WORKSHOP ON TOBACCO FREE YOUTH

On 19th September, The College had hosted a Workshop on Tobacco Control in association with SAMBANDH HEALTH FOUNDATION, Gurugram, New Delhi. Mrs. Sandhya Menezes, Principal welcomed the gathering. Dr. Vivek Shetty, Cancer Surgeon, Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bengaluru addressed the students and said addiction should never be a personal choice. The effects of tobacco use is destructive as it poses serious health threat. Mr. Sanjay Seth, Trustee and Head, Tobacco Control Sambandh Health Foundation was the Guest of Honour. Students of various Colleges in and around Bengaluru took part in this ‘Tobacco Free Youth’ Campaign. The main motto of the workshop was to build Public awareness of the immediate health damage caused by smoking.




PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME ON TIME MANAGEMENT

In association with the Hindu, on 16th September 2019, a workshop was conducted for I PU students on the subject SELF DISCIPLINE AND SELF CONFIDENCE. Mrs. Akhila, Soft Skills Trainer made students understand how self discipline helps them to overcome procastination and laziness as self discipline gives power to stick to their decisions and follow them through, without changing their mind. In association with Deccan Herald Personality development programme was conducted for II PU students on the topic “Time Management”. Mr. Mallikarjun, the Resource person told students about how to manage time to accomplish specific tasks, projects and goals. Time management helps students to focus better and lessens stress. Students were asked to set priorities and schedule their time appropriately.




TEACHERS' DAY CELEBRATION

Teachers’ day was celebrated on 5th September 2019. Dr. Gururaj Karjagi, Founder and Chairman of the Academy for Creative Teaching [ACT] was the Guest of honour. Dr. Karjagi in his address to the teaching faculty spoke on the integrity and values to be taught to the students. He said only teachers can change the society as they have the power to reach the student and then society. Later Mr. Roshan Menezes, Administrator felicitated the teachers who have exhibited exemplary work and rendered selfless services. Mrs. Dorothy Menezes, the Director of Academics, Mrs. Sandhya Menezes, Principal, Carmel PU College and Mrs. Florence D’Souza, Principal, Carmel High School graced the ocassion. The Student Council had also organised a Cultural programme to show their love and gratitude towards their teachers.




MAKING OF ECO- FRIENDLY GANESHA BY ECO CLUB

Growing environmental concerns have led to the innovation of eco-friendly Ganesha Idols. Carmelites celebrated the arrival of Ganesha Chaturthi in an eco-friendly way. Ms. Shilpa, a trainer, B-PAC taught around 80 students to make Ganesha idols using clay, a bio-degradable matter. The activity also enabled students to get in touch with their Creativity.




LAKSHYA 2019

A Career Guidance program was organised in association with Banjara Academy on 17th August 2019. Dr Ali Khwaja, Renowned Counsellor, Director of Banjara Academy addressed the students and told them to choose their career based on their interest and aptitude. Students could make informed decisions about their subject choices and career pathways. Resource persons of various fields - Engineering, Medicine, Para medical courses, Legal studies, Commerce, Sports, Armed forces, Design and Creativity, Drone related courses, Journalsm, Theatre and Dramatics were available in the campus for the students to explore and take guidance. Students had an opportunity to have one-one interaction with Dr Ali Khwaja and his team. Neighbouring schools and colleges also attended the programme.




INDEPENDENCE DAY

As India marks its 73rd Independence Day, celebrations were held in the campus with unfurling the tricolor flag by our Principal Mrs Sandhya Menezes. Later the principal in her speech said that Unity in Diversity has given risen to the great National Integration characteristic to our country which has become the foundation of strong and prosperous India. It is everyone’s duty to preserve the rich cultural heritage of India. The celebrations came to an end by distributing sweets to the students.




PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

On 1st August 2019, a workshop was conducted for II PUC students in association with Deccan Herald on the topic- Motivation and Confidence Building. Mrs Sushma Kashi, soft skills trainer told students that Self Confidence means believing in oneself. Students need to be confident to face and overcome the fears. She advised students to follow 3P’s i.e, Passion, Perfect Practice and Perseverance. Motivation is a driving force that results in action.

On 5th August 2019, personality development programme was conducted for I PU students in association with The Hindu. Mrs Hemalatha, soft skills trainer spoke on “Stress Management”. She emphasized that Stress Management can help students become more competent and efficient. Students can reduce their level of academic stress by improving time management.




BLOOD DONATION CAMP

Carmel Community Service centre in association with Lions Club of Bengaluru Royal Palace and Lions Club of Bengaluru, Gokula had organized Blood Donation camp on 27th July 2019 in sports Arena Basement. The Camp was a success as 137 units of blood was collected. Thanks to the members of Community Service for their voluntary work in spreading awareness on donating blood.




FEAST OF OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

Feast of our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patroness of Carmel Education Society was celebrated on 16th July 2019. The celebration began by seeking the Almighty’s blessing through a prayer service. The rendition of soulful numbers by the choir was appealing. Rev. Fr. Vijesh Menezes , the chief celebrant spoke on the significance of the day. In his address, he urged the teachers to become the beacons of light of the world who dispel the darkness of ignorance in the young minds. Teachers are magicians who transform the lives of an individual and made them responsible citizens. He also said Teaching is neither a fancy nor a job but a divine commitment. Mr Roshan Menezes, Administrator thanked the gathering for their gracious presence on this auspicious day. Mrs Dorothy Menezes, Director of Academics,Mrs Sandhya Menezes, Principal , Carmel PU Collge, Mrs Florence D’souza, Principal , Carmel High school were also present. SAMHITHA – Annual Magazine 2018-2019 was released on 16th July 2019. ‘Samhitha’ means putting together . An humble attempt has been made by the Editorial Committee to present the galore of events i.e both curricular and other activities conducted during the academic year. It also makes a record of the staff and students achievements.




MALHAR 2019

Malhar, an Intra-collegiate festival was held on 29th June 2019. The event was inaugurated by an alumni, Ms Jeevitha Sagar, model and an Actress. Malhar provided a platform to Carmelites to showcase their talent in Literature, art, science, marketing, music, dance, photography, fashion show and lots more. The day also witnessed a parade by Carmel NCC wing to create awareness among students about ill effects of the drugs.




INTERNATIONAL PLASTIC BAG FREE DAY

Carmel Institutions, Basaveshwarnagar organized a plastic picking campaign on 3rd July 2019.Understanding the social responsibility of making a plastic free society, staff and students of Carmel Eco Club, Community Service and NCC girls unit actively participated in the Plogging event. Around 120 volunteers picked waste plastic bags, tetra packs, PET bottles and all plastic and dry waste found on main streets empty sites and around residential areas in our locality with a radius of about 200 meters around the college campus. The activity highlighted the plastic crisis in our locality of Basaveshwarnagar. Students also educated the shop keepers and residents about the havoc created by single use plastics. 138.4 Kilograms of waste was collected and handed over to the BBMP officials.




WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Taking care of the Earth is not just a responsibility – it's a privilege. World Environment Day was observed in the campus on 7th June 2019 with a theme Avoid Plastic Be Fantastic. The Carmelites took a pledge to make Carmel campus plastic free zone. Principal Mrs Sandhya Menezes addressed the students and told them to reduce the usage of plastic by giving up plastic bags, bottles and plastic cutlery. Mr. Roshan Menezes gave a call to the students to reduce on single-use plastics as getting rid of plastic waste is a primary problem and it is each one's responsibility to contribute to make the earth a better place.




STAFF ORIENTATION

The teaching faculty had an orientation programme on 28th May 2019 at The School of Ancient Wisdom, Devanahalli, Bengaluru. The programme was conducted in three sessions. In the first session certified Zentangle teachers, Mr Dilip Patel and Mrs Malathi Karpur taught the benefits of practising zentangle. ZENTANGLE is a fun way to create beautiful image by drawing repetitive patterns. Zentangle stimulates creativity and improves one's focus. In the second session teachers were taught YOGANIDRA that helps to relieve stress. In the noon session Mrs Fathima spoke on MINDFULNESS in which teachers were made to know how to use their senses to anchor their mind. On the whole the teachers were enriched with new experience.




Parents Orientation

An orientation programme was organized for the parents of I PU students on May 26th 2019. Principal Mrs Sandhya Menezes welcomed the parents. Mr Roshan Menezes, Administrator made parents know about the special features of the institution like personality development programmes, leadership training programmes and other various activities oraganised for the students. He also gave the parents the general structure and importance of PU education. Ajit Kaykini, proficient speaker from Buoyancee, oriented the parents about parental behavior with teenagers. He advised parents to work on creating trust in their children and to train them to deal with the situations. Parents were told to create hope, faith and fan the burning desire in their children and should never display negativity. Later the speaker answered the queries of the parents. On the whole the session was educative and an enlightening one.




Students Orientation

On May 18th 2019, Carmel campus was brim with new vigour and energy as the I PU students set foot to pursue their Pre-university Education, carrying their dreams and aspirations. Principal Mrs Sandhya Menezes, formally welcomed the freshers and this was followed by the introduction of the teaching faculty to the students. In the first session of the orientation programme, Mr Roshan Menezes, Administrator briefed on the rules and regulations of the institution. He told students to make most of their student life as Carmel tutors young individuals to a holistic growth. In the second half of the session Mr Mayank Solanki, Value Educator motivated the young minds to take a proactive role in their learning. He advised students to explore beyond academics and also to remain consistent in their learning process and in turn earn their experience to be successful in life.




Investiture Ceremony

The newly formed students council of Carmel PU College, Basaveshwaranagar was inducted at the Investiture Ceremony. Adrian D’Souza, founder, Deccan Group of companies, presented badges and sashes to new office bearers. Principal Sandhya Menezes indicated the new members, while Roshan Menezes administered the oath. The students who excelled in Board Exams 2018-2019 were also felicitated.
